Best Sewing Chair (Buying Guide)

We really can’t make our projects, create our own clothes, quilting, embroidery or even mending clothes and other objects without looking for the best sewing chair.

Whether sewing is your hobby or something you do because you can’t find clothes that fit you perfectly or because you want to prolong the life of your clothes, curtains, etc. or you just love making quilts, no matter the case, everyone knows that doing all that work or our crafts in a very comfortable environment is crucial.

Whether we’re doing a job desk or we just sit at a table to sew, back health is just as important. While the standing desk trend can have its benefits, we can’t do standing sewing. Unless you’re using a handheld sewing machine but those are very limited in scope.

If you are interested in knowing how to choose a chair for your work, you can check out this guide. It’s written by professionals and it analyzes a variety of chairs that we can choose from.

But we must also keep in mind that while we might force ourselves to maintain a pretty good posture if we’re working in an office, maintaining a good, proper posture when we’re sewing might slip our mind.

I’m definitely the worst at maintaining a good posture no matter what I’m doing. Whether I’m sewing, working, cooking, gardening, my posture is always bad.

So, with this opportunity of looking for top recommendations for the best sewing chair, I’m trying to correct a bit of my old habits, too. It remains to be seen how long that will last. Old habits are hard to break. Old postures even harder.

Best Sewing Chair Reviews

I’ve recommended a whole array of sewing machines of all kinds, from quilting sewing machines to sewing machines for making clothes and even embroidery sewing machines.

I also wrote about thread for sewing machine and the best lamps for sewing.

Now, our focus will be on something completely different. But it might be just as important. Because nothing is more important than our body and its well-being. Let’s see which options we have when we want to shop for the best sewing chair.

My favorite is the Silybon Home Office Chair. It has an affordable price, offers amazing comfort, and the design is quite beautiful.

The Arrow H6103 Adjustable Height Hydraulic Sewing and Craft Chair is quite good but the price is a bit too expensive for some of us. That’s why it’s not my top recommendation.

Although, if you have a budget above $300, you might want to check it out. It’s quite great and the design is one of the best.

The Silybon Drafting Chair is a good recommendation if you want a wide height range.

If your budget is well under $50, the best option is the Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Desk Chair.

1. Silybon Home Office Chair: Overall the Best Sewing Chair

I am absolutely not saying that the Silybon Home Office Chair is absolutely perfect. I’m sure there will be some people who will find it lacking or who would wish to return it. That’s always the case, even when we’re buying an amazing sewing machine that everyone raves about.

What I am saying is that the Silybon Home Office Chair is my top recommendation for the best sewing chair.

I love the quality, the design, and I love that it’s not overly expensive.

The price around $150 is definitely not cheap but it could be considered affordable. If you want to check out a pretty expensive model, check out the Arrow H6103 Adjustable Height Hydraulic Sewing and Craft Chair that I will review just below.

All in all, the Silybon Home Office Chair is not perfect but it is my favorite and maybe it could be yours, too.

It’s also very popular among sewers.

There are more than a few user reviews from people who have bought it to sit in front of their sewing machine.

Buyers have mentioned that it’s a great chair, easy to assemble and very comfortable.

They love the fact that the arms are not fabric covered.

It is the perfect size.

Sewers love that the arms lift up.

It’s a sturdy chair and the material the seat is made of looks like it will last. And that it’s worth the money, which is definitely very important.

These are just a quick mashup of what sewers have written about the Silybon Home Office Chair. There are many more other high praises.

Features

It is described as being superior quality. It is more breathable, softer, and more comfortable.

I must admit that I love the design a lot. It’s somewhat unique but I love the whole look.

We also get a bunch of colors to choose from, which is always nice: black, dark gray, light blue, light gray, pink, white.

It is a stylish design paired with the S-shaped reclining ergonomic lumbar support.

It allows us to adjust our back and maintain a nice spine posture. Also, it enables us to reduce pressure or pain in the lower back and experience a more comfortable creative process.

The back is high-density mesh. It’s a breathable material.

It also comes with a high quality and density native cotton cushion to balance softness, durability, and support. And more efficiently reduce stress on hips.

We get a pneumatic control bar. This is the part that allows us to adjust the height of the seat.

The tilt of the back with a 120 degrees tilt tension is adjusted with the swing pressure regulator.

The armrest can be lifted up and down. If you want to wholly push the chair under your work table or desk, just lift up the arms and it’s done. It will save up space.

Also, the maximum weight is 280 pounds. It’s satisfactory.

2. Arrow H6103 Adjustable Height Hydraulic Sewing and Craft Chair: Amazing Sewing Chair

One thing you’ll notice right away is that this is absolutely not the cheapest option if you’re looking for the best sewing chair.

The price will exceed $300, which means that it’s a bit expensive. So I totally understand that it might not be for everyone.

The high price might also be a reason for why the Arrow H6103 Adjustable Height Hydraulic Sewing and Craft Chair is not extremely popular. Because the quality is pretty fantastic.

There’s a user review that mentions that this Arrow Sewing and Craft Chair is good enough but there’s nothing exceptional about it. It seems that given the quality, the person writing the review believes that this one is about $100 too expensive.

So I totally understand that the price might be a bit of a problem. And that’s why I didn’t review it as my top recommendation for the best sewing chair.

Well, the company is called Arrow Sewing so I love that we get the opportunity to check out a chair designed specifically for sewing, quilting, and other crafts. I like that a lot and it’s certainly a big reason for wanting to review it.

If you have a budget around $600 and, more importantly, if you can find to buy it, there’s another very expensive chair that I will recommend. Although, there are sewing machines that are 5-6 times cheaper.

It’s the Bernina Red Chair. Indeed, it’s a chair created by a sewing machine brand, although it’s designed and manufactured by Horn of America. It’s also unbelievably expensive and pretty hard to find so this one is not for me but you might be interested.

Features

The chair stands 29 inches tall. And it adjusts to 33 inches.

The seat height adjusts from 18 to 22 inches.

Moreover, the seat cushion is 18 inches wide and 16 inches deep.

It holds up to 300 pounds, which is pretty good.

It has a plush cushion and lumbar support. They’re made with durable upholstery fabric.

The manufacturer mentions that it is designed with targeted lumbar support for better sewing posture. Most of us will need help with that.

The surprising part among its features is the hidden storage compartment under the seat. It’s something I would never have thought of. I probably wouldn’t be using it but it’s an interesting addition.

There are plenty of design options and colors to choose from: black cat, cat’s meow, duchess blue, lady gray, princess hazel tan, royal purple, ruby red, sew now sew wow print fabric.

Some of these names are hilarious but they match the fact that these chairs have been created for creative people. I like that.

3. Silybon Drafting Chair

At the moment, this Silybon Drafting Chair is not extremely popular because I think it’s quite new. But I think that it’s a very interesting option to consider if you’re looking for the best sewing chair.

There are a few user reviews from people who bought it for their sewing work area and all those reviews are positive.

Someone mentions that it’s easy to assemble, the chair goes from a regular size desk to a taller craft/drafting height and it works for both.

Another buyer is praising it for being very comfortable and they like the flip arms.

Someone else likes the comfortable seat, the adjustable height, the fact that it’s lightweight, moves easily and the price is decent for the quality. It’s a great buy.

Regarding the price, I wouldn’t say that it’s the cheapest but it can be considered affordable. It just depends on your budget.

Features

It has an ergonomic S-shaped design that can relieve back tension and it can reduce lumbar pain.

What I can say is that it’s comfortable, we can give it that. And the cushion for the spine goes all the way up to support our shoulders, as well.

The high-density cushion is very nice and it won’t hurt our buttocks. It is made of resilient native cotton.

Of course, one of the most attractive features about the Silybon Drafting Chair is the adjustable height.

We get an adjustable seat height of 21.65 – 29.53 inches. That’s quite the range.

That means that it is suitable not only for regular office desks but it’s a good match for drafting desks and standing desks.

There’s also a height adjustable footrest ring. That’s great because the chair can be lifted quite up high.

The 90 degrees flip-up armrest is a nice addition and people love this feature.

Also, it can support an adult of 300 pounds.

The mute wheels roll quietly and smoothly without scratching our floors. Obviously, these are 360 degree swivel wheels.

The black and white design is not bad. It’s not incredibly beautiful but it is a clean design that won’t stand out in any room. It can blend in with any design.

4. Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Desk Chair: Cheap Sewing Chair

This one reminds me of my chair when I was in middle school, which was impressively comfortable and very long lasting. I guess we could say that it can be considered a nice pick for students and it’s certainly good for that.

Furthermore, there are a lot of buyers who have chosen the Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Desk Chair for their sewing room or work area.

Before talking about what it offers, I want to make something clear.

This is a very cheap chair. I recommend it as a good choice for people with a budget well under $50.

However, there’s a risk that you’re not going to like it because, unfortunately, that can always be the case when we’re buying very affordable products. It’s the same case if we’re considering buying a sewing machine under $50 or that costs around $50-$70.

Still, considering the cheap price, I am amazed that the Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Desk Chair has a pretty low percentage of negative reviews.

All in all, I personally like it.

There are also a lot of buyers who have bought it for their sewing room or for using it exclusively as their sewing chair.

And most of these sewers are quite satisfied with the Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Desk Chair. I’m definitely impressed. I own a pair of sewing scissors that cost about the same as this chair so I think that it offers good value for money.

There’s a small chance that you might not like so make sure to test it out as soon as it arrives.

Features

It has the following dimensions: 33.46 x 20.86 x 22 inches. It’s pretty small so it will fit well in crowded spaces, too.

We get adjustable height, which is very nice.

The pneumatic lever allows us to adjust the height from 28 to 33 inches.

It has a mesh back that is quite narrow but it can still provide a bit of a good support for our back. It also tilts to a relaxing position.

And it has a padded upholstered cushion that is pretty comfortable.

Another thing that I like is that we can choose from a variety of colors. I like how many color options we get, they’re awesome.

5. SMUG Home Office Desk Chair

The first thing I really like about the SMUG Home Office Desk Chair is the price. At around $100, it’s quite affordable so it might be exactly what some people are looking for and have the budget for.

Another thing I like is the design. It’s quite a beautiful chair, elegant if I might call it that.

And I also love the colors we get to choose from: blue, yellow, and grey. All three colors look great, the yellow one definitely pops up.

However, there is one thing I must make clear.

While user reviews are mostly positive, there is an important thing to mention.

Buyers mention that this chair is on the smaller side. For example, it might be too small for a large man.

The manufacturer mentions that it has a weight capacity of 250 pounds. That’s not a lot.

Features

One thing I truly appreciate about the SMUG Home Office Desk Chair is the fact that it’s very comfortable. Both the seat and the back offer nice comfort and good support. That’s extremely important.

Someone who purchased this one for their sewing room mentions that they’re very happy with it. It’s comfortable and easy to move around in.

It’s definitely great for sewing and quilting. Another person wrote a review saying that they couldn’t ask for a better chair. That’s certainly something we want to hear.

However, I should mention that it doesn’t come with armrests. Some people are not going to care

Height is adjustable, of course.

It is designed for small spaces so it will fit nicely even in crowded rooms.

6. SewErgo 200SE Ergonomic Task Chair

My first impression was this: this doesn’t look like a $300 or so chair. Should we even consider it as an option when we’re looking for the best sewing chair?

Well, the SewErgo 200SE Ergonomic Task Chair is certainly an interesting thing that needs a deeper analysis. I’ll let you decide if it’s worth the money or not. For now, let me tell you more about it because I have some things to tell.

We’re informed that it’s made in Canada. And that it’s made from recycled materials, 62% recycled polyester. That sounds fantastic.

However, if you look more closely at it, you might notice a quite unusual thing.

For the selling price, it doesn’t come with wheels. We’ll have to buy those as add-ons. And, trust me, you’ll want the wheels. It’s pretty awful without them so be prepared for the price to increase because it must.

And that’s how the SewErgo 200SE Ergonomic Task Chair is the most unusual option on our list looking for the best sewing chair.

Do I love it? Frankly, I don’t like it when I have to pay extra for things that should have been included, that come with pretty much any other product. So, I’m going to say that I don’t love it but you might.

Features

What I like is that it’s called a sewing chair.

And they’re manufactured in Canada supporting local manufacturing and craftsmanship. That’s fantastic and I always love products like that. Just keep in mind that you have to buy the wheels.

I also love the backrest. It’s ergonomic and it will offer amazing lumbar support. It doesn’t skimp on comfort.

It comes with 3 adjustable features to fit seating preferences, including adjusting the height.

Its dimensions are: 20.5 x 24 x 37.5 inches.

The backrest dimensions are: 18.5 x 17.5 inches. It’s big enough for the entire back.

The weight capacity is 250 pounds max, which is a bit low.

All in all, I will admit that the SewErgo 200SE Ergonomic Task Chair is a fantastic, comfortable sewing chair but you have to have a pretty generous budget to afford it.

How to sew with a good posture

The thing with doing something that captivates all our attention is that we forget about everything else that should matter, like our posture.

I totally understand how engrossed we can get in a hobby or a project. How we can bend over the sewing machine to watch those stitches flow, how we can marvel at our project and simply let go of any other thoughts.

However, the problem is that if you’re sewing for long hours constantly without using a good chair and a good posture, the shoulder and back pain can get to a point where you have to stop sewing after a few hours of work.

So, besides looking for the best sewing chair, we also need to be mindful of many other things.

The chair won’t solve all our problems, no matter how amazing it is.

Have you considered taking breaks without being forced to by your shoulders or back or neck screaming at you?

We should be taking breaks every 30 to 60 minutes, even if we have the correct sewing and quilting posture. Take a few minutes to move around, to play with your dogs or cats, to have a snack, to take a walk around the block, to dance a little, do some stretches, etc.

Doing some stretches is a fantastic break idea that will help our hips and lower back.

I find that taking frequent breaks and moving around the house is one of the hardest things to remember. When we’re being captivated by a project, taking a break is the last thing most of us want to do. But it’s important. This is just one of those important things that we must incorporate into our craft.

Sewing machine height

Here is a YouTube video that offers amazing tips.

It will teach you about ergonomically arranging your sewing machine. Having our sewing machine at the right high for us is one of the most important things to think about.

That video also shows us how to hold our body to prevent pains in our neck, back, shoulders, etc.

It seems that: the bed of our sewing machine needs to be even with the bottom of our ribcage. I hope that is the height you can achieve in your setup.

If we buy a chair with height adjustment, that can make the right positioning a bit easier.

If we’re doing this alignment, the bed of our sewing machine with the bottom of our ribcage can already solve a lot of our problems.

It naturally creates the right angle for our arms.

If your sewing machine is placed on a higher surface, like a dining room table or something like that, you can get the right height if you can raise your chair higher. Or if you place a big pillow underneath you.

But there’s the problem of also aligning your foot controller so your knees and hips maintain the right angle. You can place it on a box or on a stepstool. You’ll have to see about that.

That can be easier if you’re buying a sewing machine with speed control so we can control the speed from a slider button.

Sewing posture

Our hands must be straight and relaxed.

Next, don’t bend over your worktable.

Make sure that your head is over your neck and not bent forward.

If that distance between the needle and your eyes seems to make things not that easy to see clearly, you might need glasses. That’s one of the ways I figured out that I might need glasses.

And I was right. I was always bending forward because my vision needed a bit of aid.

If we maintain a correct posture as we’re sewing, we might notice that our muscles can be sore after a few hours. That’s natural because we are engaging our muscles to maintain that correct posture. Sore muscles in the right places, especially around our abdomen are good. Sore muscles in the neck, shoulders and back are a clear indication that we’re not doing it right.

Make sure to drink a lot of water to prevent soreness.

All in all, while looking for the best sewing chair is an important step for working in proper conditions, it’s absolutely not the only thing we must keep in mind, it might actually be the easiest step in achieving the correct sewing posture.
